The Wheel of the Year

A personal series of art illustrations showcasing the symbols and traditions associated with the eight seasonal celebrations observed by modern Wicca. Combining stylistic elements of Alphonse Mucha’s work with Wiccan ritual and cultural diversity.

Imbolc

Litha (Midsummer)

June 21st/22nd; Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere)

Litha is a time to honour the Sun, and the Oak King at the height of his powers. Celebrations include lighting traditional/ritual bonfires for protection from malevolent spirits and negativity, gathering herbs/medicinal plants (particularly St. John’s Wort), and divination.

Symbols and colours of the day are gold/yellow/white and blue/green of mature growth, summer flowers (such as chamomile, daisies, and sunflowers), seashells, and the first fruits/vegetables of the season.

Lughnasadh

August 1st (Northern Hemisphere)

Lughnasadh is the first of the three harvest festivals honoured in the year cycle, and the most directly tied to Gaelic culture specifically (though other neighbouring regions celebrate Lammas, a similar “loaf blessing” tradition, on the same day). Lughnasadh is a time to give thanks at the beginning of the harvest season and to ask for care/protection for the ripening crops. Celebrations and rituals differ wildly, though historic Irish customs honour the god Lugh (associated with light/the Sun) and his triumph over blight and famine; in some myths it is a funerary athletic contest event Lugh holds in honour of his mother Tailtiu, who died of exhaustion after clearing the fields of Ireland for agriculture.

Traditional celebrations included mountain/hill-climbing, athletic contests, visiting holy wells, music, and storytelling.

Mabon

September 21/22; Autumn Equinox (Northern Hemisphere)

As the second of the harvest festivals, Mabon is a time for letting go of things that no longer serve you, and giving thanks for the good things you have (especially the fruits of one’s own labour)! While the name/current iteration originated in the 1970’s (theoretically named for the Welsh Mabinogion), celebrating the Autumn Equinox and the fruits of the harvest is an ancient and almost-universal practice.
